The companies that advertise $13 per room are almost always unscrupulous companies that come in and hit you with ridiculous up charges that they should have told you about in the beginning. You may have seen these type of companies on the “investigative news stories”. The bottom line is that these companies charge the same or more than we do for near worthless cleaning. If you read all the fine print, you find out that the low price only includes “basic steam” which is just water. Then they charge you more for “soap”, “degreaser”, etc.

Does my new upholstery need fabric protection?

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Some fabrics come pre-treated with fabric protection. You may have been offered a post treatment carpet protector. Some companies use protector that is really best suited for carpet and not fabric, so just because your fabric has been treated does not mean that it is treated the best way possible. To determine whether your new upholstery could benefit from a professional quality fabric protector, give our office a call and we will help evaluate it for you.

“How Often Should I Clean My Carpets, Rugs and Floors?”

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Have you ever wondered if you are cleaning your floors and fabrics enough? Or too much? Are there frequency guidelines for professional cleaning? If so, where do you find them? Surely you have heard “Wait as long as you can before you clean your carpet…” or “Once you’ve cleaned your carpet, it’s never the same….”

These widely used comments have stemmed from unfortunate encounters with uninformed cleaners that have left the carpet with an overload of detergent residue. The consumer has assumed that this is the case with all carpet cleaning and resolved to wait until the carpet is in dire straights to clean it.

The good news is that a properly cleaned carpet will not re-soil as quickly and will actually last longer. Why? Because damaging soils are removed with effective cleaning. Soil that is not removed by vacuuming, even though it can rarely be seen by the naked eye, cuts and slices on the carpet fibers as the carpet is being walked on breaking down the carpet yarns in the traffic areas. The result is that even with restorative cleaning at that point, it will not correct the damage that has been done to the fiber. Fiber producers and carpet manufacturers recommend that a residential carpet should be professionally cleaned at least 18 to 24 months for best performance, more often in heavily trafficked and heavy soiling situations.

A Clean Carpet is a Healthy Carpet

Not to mention that a carpet that is not cleaned on a regular basis is an unhealthy carpet. Carpet is like a sink. It collects soils, pollens, insecticides, exhaust, etc. that gets tracked in or blown in from the polluted outdoors. This creates an unhealthy indoor environment.

What About My Hard Surface Floors and Rugs?

Hard surface floors can also be permanently damaged by not being professionally cleaned on a regular basis. For example, hardwood floors get deep scratch patterns. The grout on stone and tile floors isn’t sealed or the sealer has been affected by household cleaners and no longer repels the soil and spillage. Also, the grout is a “valley” that the soil gets mopped into on a daily basis.

And finally, a 9×12 Oriental Rug can hold up to 87 pounds of soil without looking dirty! This was demonstrated by a study done by the Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Company. So, get your rugs cleaned about once a year as well, including removing the dry soil.

Returning Spots on Carpet

Friday, February 1st, 2008

If the spot returned within a day or so after the cleaning, then it was either not removed and wicked back, or it was not removed but appeared that it was removed. If the spot returned after a week, two weeks, or a month or so, it probably either has some residue from cleaning agents left behind, or the spot was oily or sticky and was not totally removed therefore collecting soil in the same area again.

The 7 Principles of Upholstery Cleaning

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

The world’s most recognized body of certification (IICRC) publishes standards for safe, effective cleaning for upholstery. Our company follows these standards to insure that you get the maximum soil and spot removal in the safest manner possible. WARNING: Most upholsetry cleaners are NOT certified and do not use these standards! Here are the seven important steps that should always be taken in caring for fine fabrics…

1. Fabric Inspection: A simple test which involves taking a tiny swatch of the fabric reveals the fiber content.

2. Dye Testing: A small amount of upholstery cleaner is applied to an inconspicuous area of the fabric to test for dye stability.

3. Dry Soil Removal: In cleaning any textile, the first step is always to remove as much dry soil as possible. This improves the following cleaning steps greatly.

4. Soil Suspension: A preconditioning agent is used on most fabrics to “suspend” the soil for more effective extraction.

5. Soil Removal (Extraction): A water or solvent based solution is used to whisk away the suspended soils.

6. Pile Setting/Grooming: Textiles that have a “pile” are set after cleaning with a special grooming brush.

7. Drying: High velocity air movers are used to promote faster drying.

Pets Gone Wild On Your Carpet

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

What should you do when your pet “goes on the carpet”? Are puppy puddles putting you in a particular predicament? Well, not to worry, that’s what we are here for.

First of all, if you have a pet that is prone to urinate on the carpet, take a quick walk through your home each day when you get home. The quicker you get to a pet stain the better.

Some technical tips on urine: When urine is first excreted, it is on the acid side of the pH scale and very easily removed. Within hours of being exposed to oxygen it turns to an alkaline pH. When this happens it will coninue to increase in alkalinity to the point of becoming practically ammonia. This explains the ammonia like odor. At this stage the urine dramatically affects the dye structure of the carpet.

To clean the urine spot: Mix 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water and clean with a white terry towel. If you have a small extraction machine, it would be ideal to use it. DO NOT USE OVER THE COUNTER SPOT REMOVERS OR ALL PURPOSE CLEANERS ON URINE! YOU MAY SET THE SPOT PERMANENTELY! IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE REMOVING IT, CALL US IMMEDIATELY.
