What to do if Paint is Spilled on Your Carpet

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Don’t panic.  First, extract all that you can with a wet vacuum or shop vac.  Then, call us.  We’ve taken care of problems just like this.  We can save your carpet if you call us IMMEDIATELY!

Acrylic paint might be a problem. Acrylic is often referred to as craft paint, so it’s a common kind of paint you might have in your house. If some gets on the carpet, here’s what you can do to get rid of it.

First, extract with a wet or shop vacuum.  Then, blot the area with a mild cleaning agent that is safe for your rug (we have an excellent one available at our Olive Road location). If you are concerned about the laundry detergent bleaching or harming your carpet, test in an inconspicuous spot first.

Like with latex paint, use odorless mineral spirits if the stain still remains as according to the directions above.

If you have a paint stain that has dried or you have spilled a considerable amount of paint, you might need to seek the help of a specialist.  If you experiment too much, you could ultimately damage your carpet.

Paint is one of the most vicious stains on carpet.  But if you know what to do when the emergency arises, you’ll have emerged with beautiful carpet

5 Tips to Have Clean Tile, Grout, and Vinyl Floors

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

1. NEVER use acidic cleaners like muriatic acid to clean your floors. Even vinegar is an acidic cleaner you should avoid. This is even more important if you have natural stone tile.

2. Instead of sweeping with a broom, get a vacuum sweeper for dry soil removal. This will keep soils out of your grout.

3. Mop your floors at LEAST once a week.

4. Use a neutral PH cleaning agent made specifically for tile or vinyl floors. Call us for specific recommendaitons.

5. Professsional cleaning and sealing should be done every 1-2 years to prolong the life and beauty of your floors. Mr. Steam’s Valley Steam is here to help.

How to Identify Handmade Area Rugs

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Rug fibers usually consist of wool in most mid to upper end rugs. High-end rugs may also have silk. Synthetic fibers such as acrylic, polyester, nylon, and olefin (polypropylene) can be found in more economical rugs.Cotton, sea grass, and sisal rugs are often moderate rugs. Your most stain resistant rugs will contain synthetic fibers, but won’t feel as soft and luxurious. All other natural fiber rugs are susceptible to staining if spots aren’t cleaned immediately.

What do you look for in a rug? Quality of wool, type of dye, and knots. Simply because a rug is expensive, doesn’t mean it has good dyes or is constructed well. Make sure you know what it is and shop around first. Be extra cautious about purchasing a rug outside the United States.

The construction of a rug is also a key factor. To determine if the rug is handmade, turn it upside down and look at the back. If you cannot see the pattern as clearly as on the face, the rug is not handmade. If the rug passes this first test, look at the fringe. The fringe should be an extension of the yarn inside the rug and should not look like it was sewed on separately. Many rugs that claim to be hand stitched are stitched by hand with a machine.

BEWARE of rugs with cloth backings. These rugs often have something to hide. The cloth is either covering flaws in a handmade rug or even worse, glue that is holding the backing together. Glued backings have a tendency to get torn when the rug is moved or cleaned.

    Mattress Cleaning

    Saturday, June 19th, 2010

ARE YOU SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY?
Before we begin, lets agree…Please understand that our desire to inform you on the subject of dust mite contamination, as disturbing as it can be for some people, isn’t meant to scare you into taking action. Rather, it’s strictly designed to inform and educate so that with the proper information, you can make the best decision for you and those you care for concerning this subject. Our belief will always be invested in the intelligence and discernment of our customers, and their ability to know what best to do and how best to react given the facts.

If you or anyone in your family identifies with any of the following allergy related maladies such as Asthma, Eczema, Hay Fever, Bronchitis, Inflammation of the Mucous Membranes, Itchy Red Eyes, Headaches, Sinus Pain, Fatigue, early morning fits of excessive sneezing, even a feeling of depression when you wake up, you may well be sleeping with the enemy.

Who is this enemy? He’s called a dust mite and we’ll spare you trying to remember or even pronounce the scientific name. Dust mites live primarily in mattresses, but they are invisible to the human eye. The dust mite feeds on shed dead skin cells. The feces and dead bodies of mites are allergens to susceptible people, causing asthma, rhinitis or dermatitis.

These little creatures, not visible to the naked eye, and in fact, they’re so small that as many as 1000 of them could be placed on the head of a pin. And guess where their favorite breeding spot is? Yes, that’s right. . . the mattress. Their ideal home!
Why the mattress? Because it’s warm, often moist, cozy, easy to burrow into and full of their favorite food…skin flakes, the skin flakes every human being sheds every day and night of his or her life, no matter what their age, sex or state of health.

And you can’t just vacuum them away.

Expert Tips to Help Keep Your Carpet Fresh

There is one trick to removing pet stains that can save you tons of aggravation. It’s pretty easy when you think about it. But most pet owners just don’t get it.

Here’s the biggest mistake you can make. When Fido has a little tinkle or when Killer makes a huge puddle, the first course of action should NOT be towels or paper towels. This only mashes the urine down into the padding. It makes the urine harder to get out. Sure, some of the urine is absorbed in the towel, but not nearly all of it.

The second biggest mistake is grabbing for the spotter bottle first. Think about what you are doing. If you have urine in your carpet and spray some spot remover on the urine, you now have a puddle of urine with spot remover in it. This does NOT equal clean. The spot remover doesn’t make the urine evaporate. Sure, it may make it smell a little better, but the urine is still there and in a big way.

Here’s an important concept you should know: Spot remover is made to remove what left behind after you clean up the bulk of the mess. It isn’t designed to make urine evaporate. So having said that, what do you use to remove the bulk of the urine before treating with a spot remover?

    Here’s the trick:

Use a wet vacuum or a shop vacuum as soon as you find urine on your carpet or rug. You can get one at any hardware store and most department stores. When used on a fresh urine spot, the wet vacuum will remove a majority of the urine. Then whip out your Mr. Stuff( Mr.Steam’s Valley Steam carries this product only) spot remover and treat the remaining urine left behind.

It’s really that easy. If you use this tip you can save your carpet, rugs, and your relationship with your pet.

How to prepare for Mr.Steam’s Valley Steam

    Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

    1. Please remove magazine racks, floor plants, and small items etc. from areas that

    are going to be cleaned.

    2. Please remove all breakable items from furniture which will have to be

temporarily moved, cleaned under, and placed back.

    3. Please pin up any full-length draperies so that they will be at least 6 inches off the

    floor.

    4. Please pin up any skirts on upholstered furniture and beds, which may be touching

    the carpet.

    5. Computer equipment, china cabinets, sectional sofas, entertainment centers,

antique and fragile furniture cannot be moved. However, carpet underneath such

items can be cleaned where sufficient room is available, or we can edge right

    around the base.

    6. During the pre-inspection walk-through with your technicians, please advise them

of any special instructions to follow when moving your furniture. It is helpful to

know about weak legs, loose tops or previous repairs.

    7. Please, call attention to any spots or stains which may require special cleaning

    techniques.

    8. Please put your pets in a safe, quiet place where our cleaning won’t disturb them.

    9. A special note about odors:

We do everything possible to reduce or eliminate pet odors. However, due to the

depth of contamination, 100% success may not be attained. Also, for several days

after cleaning you may notice an elevated odor due to higher humidity levels.

    10. For safety sake, be sure to keep a very close eye on your curious little ones.

    What is “steam cleaning”?

    Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Hot water extraction has been known as “steam” cleaning. Truck Mounted hot water extraction is the most effective way to clean a carpet IF done properly. Some companies have used this system improperly in the past, which causes over wetting and other problems. Our systems are the most technologically advanced systems on the market. The pressure, vacuum, and temperature on our systems are regulated to ensure that no over wetting or other problems occur.

Most carpet manufacturers require you to get your carpeting professionally cleaned by a certified hot water extraction method company, to keep your warranty valid.
